{"id":3597,"date":"2025-02-09T12:31:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-09T12:31:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/invest360pro.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/09\/trumps-desire-for-greenland-sets-feelings-on-fire-in-the-arctic\/"},"modified":"2025-02-09T12:31:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T12:31:18","slug":"trumps-desire-for-greenland-sets-feelings-on-fire-in-the-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/invest360pro.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/09\/trumps-desire-for-greenland-sets-feelings-on-fire-in-the-arctic\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s desire for Greenland sets feelings on fire in the Arctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00023b6mcht9tf3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The comings and goings at Greenland\u2019s new international airport in its capital Nuuk look a bit different of late, as journalists like me come here to see what all the fuss is about.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00063b6m7zn94urm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The fuss, of course, is the result of US President Donald Trump\u2019s interest in taking control of the massive island that is geographically part of North America but legally is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a member of NATO, the European Union, and a US ally.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00073b6m9sf6lyfe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I wanted to drill down on what\u2019s here, what makes it attractive and whether the local population is welcoming or hesitant about being in Trump\u2019s sights.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00083b6mohaherip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGreenland is the front door for North America,\u201d said Tom Dans, leaning into the arguments of Greenland\u2019s importance to US national security.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cm6wi6ic100013b6m328xlsuk@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container \">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">CNN<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00093b6mm81e9lml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I\u2019d wanted to speak to Dans, a private equity investor with prospective interests in the Arctic who campaigned for Trump, but I hadn\u2019t expected to see him at the airport.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000a3b6mqxfuyujy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To be fair, Dans wasn\u2019t hard to spot. He\u2019s a tall Texan with one of those wide shiny smiles wealthy Americans tend to have. He was also wearing a baseball cap emblazoned with the American flag.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000b3b6mhwpoxc0z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He didn\u2019t have more time to chat then, so I stepped outside, into the 14 Fahrenheit (-10 Celsius) cold that was, I would learn, balmy compared to what was to come later in the week.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000d3b6m4tro2ht5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cYou are here because Trump,\u201d remarked a woman waiting in front of us. Not yet accustomed to the Nordic tone, I couldn\u2019t quite tell if this was meant as a simple statement or an accusation. \u201cWe are,\u201d I dutifully confirmed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000e3b6mc387myht@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey want more tourists to come here, they need to get more taxis,\u201d she said. We needn\u2019t worry too much though, she explained, we wouldn\u2019t be waiting in the cold for too long. Despite the apparent shortage of taxis, they can\u2019t go very far and return quickly. The trip to the center of Nuuk from the airport is about 4 miles \u2014 and then the roads just stop. There is nowhere else to go, at least by car. Greenland \u2014 three times the size of Texas \u2014 has only about 56 miles of paved roads.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000f3b6mxw1jk1pd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She introduced herself as Lisbeth H\u00f8jdal, a consultant from Denmark who was here to run a course training career counselors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000h3b6m0d1ilwt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Danish government provides Greenland a grant of about $500 million every year to support health, education and other services here. H\u00f8jdal\u2019s course was part of that package of support.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000i3b6m8kyyrnrb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            So, before I\u2019d even had a chance to look around, I\u2019d heard the views of outsiders \u2014 one American, one Dane.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000j3b6m09xf2vq1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Greenlanders have many different views.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000k3b6mxsv3hk87@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have always been told that Denmark is the big savior of Greenland,\u201d Qupanuk Olsen recalls. The Danes, she says, look down on her and fellow native Greenlandic people who are Inuit: \u201cYou guys cannot stand on your own feet; you guys don\u2019t have anything without us. You can\u2019t study, you don\u2019t have health care, you have nothing without us.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000l3b6mcb9yijza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Olsen is known as \u201cGreenland\u2019s biggest influencer\u201d with more than a million subscribers combined across YouTube, TikTok and Instagram where she shows the world the best of Greenlandic, and specifically Inuit, culture.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000p3b6m1cb9hxfs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For an introduction to that culture, she brings me to see the \u201cMother of the Sea\u201d \u2014 a striking stone sculpture on Nuuk\u2019s rocky coast, depicting Sedna, the goddess of the sea in the Inuit religion. At high tide the statue is partially submerged.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000t3b6mkm3bssv0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Inuits (sometimes incorrectly referred to as \u201cEskimos\u201d) make up almost 90% of Greenland\u2019s population of 57,000.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000u3b6m279evfka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            We walk a few steps away from the shoreline and the \u201cMother of the Sea,\u201d and Olsen points to the top of a hill and another figure, \u201cI really want this statue gone.\u201d    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cm6wl9qg1000o3b6mjio52we4@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container \">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">CNN<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000v3b6m8arl2p4i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The statue, which looks over all of Nuuk, is of Hans Egede, an 18th-century Dano-Norwegian missionary who brought Christianity to the island.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000x3b6mmbfujt4v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhy should he be up there? Why isn\u2019t it a Greenlander up there?\u201d Olsen asks. \u201cWe Greenlanders should be more proud of who we are \u2026 not celebrate some foreigner who came here and changed our culture and colonized us.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000y3b6ml6mrogmd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Danish control of Greenland dates to the time of Egede. Greenland was granted home-rule in 1979 and, after a referendum in 2008, the island was allowed more self-governing powers including the ability to hold a referendum on independence (though independence would also require approval from the Danish parliament.)    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme000z3b6m7jd0dnd1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But despite the increased autonomy, for Olsen the statue of Egede is a daily reminder of Danish colonization \u2014 something she purposefully talks about in the present tense.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00103b6mdopok7p1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI used to be a royalist. I used to look up to the Danish people and thought they were better than me. Now, I\u2019ve really realized that\u2019s not the case,\u201d she says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00113b6mryowkt5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She points to abuses of Greenland\u2019s native people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00123b6mtegmu17o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the 1960s and 70s, doctors placed IUD contraceptives in young Inuit girls without their or their parents\u2019 consent as a means of population control. An investigation by Danish and Greenlandic officials into what has become known as \u201cthe spiral case\u201d is expected to finish this year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fme00143b6m8dgzib8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI should have a lot more cousins,\u201d Olsen says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf00153b6mv0s2qqr3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another practice known as \u201clegally fatherless\u201d allowed Danish men who impregnated unmarried women in Greenland to skirt any responsibilities for their child. Olsen says her mother was one of the \u201clegally fatherless\u201d children born here.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf00173b6mlzqo0f6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In recent weeks, Denmark has announced a boost in Arctic defense spending and the Danish king revealed a new design for the royal coast of arms, making far more prominent the symbols for Greenland and the Faroe Islands (also part of the Kingdom of Denmark.)    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001a3b6mprpdptim@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But it\u2019s too little, too late, says Olsen, who supports independence for Greenland and is standing in upcoming elections.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001b3b6mff8w4mqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She acknowledges an independent Greenland would need to sign new agreements with other countries for defense of its 27,000 miles of coastline, and other arrangements when it comes to trade and financial support, but for her that\u2019s no reason to jump from Danish control to American.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001d3b6m7cte014c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhy should I? I\u2019m so proud of who we are as Inuit,\u201d she says. \u201cWhy should we just be taken by another colonizer?\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001e3b6madee7y9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US already has strong connections with and interest in Greenland.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001f3b6mmikx27tq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Climate change and the loss of sea ice is opening up new shipping routes between the US and Europe; Greenland is rich in oil and gas as well as rare earth minerals needed for modern development \u2014 a market currently controlled by China. A US base inside the Arctic Circle in the far northwest of the island gives the US Space Force \u201cSpace Superiority,\u201d the military says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001g3b6m42ouufr4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For Tom Dans, the tall Texan with the wide smile, the logical next step is for Greenland to come even closer to Washington.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001h3b6mty3w7cdh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As we walked along the pier at Nuuk\u2019s frozen harbor \u2014 where fishing boats with reinforced hulls, some equipped with harpoons for whaling, broke through the ice \u2014 I asked him if we were in the 51st state of the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001i3b6mtpdsfl3l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI don\u2019t think so. This is Greenland,\u201d Dans said, before adding with a laugh, \u201cIf we were in Canada, perhaps.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001j3b6mwyb6v8zl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dans has no current role in the Trump administration, but was appointed to the US Arctic Research Commission, an independent federal advisory committee, during the first Trump term. He says he\u2019s set up \u201cAmerican Daybreak,\u201d which he describes as \u201ca nonprofit working to build US-Greenlandic relations.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001k3b6m7j9ypck1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He also has a personal connection to Greenland. After the Nazis invaded Denmark during World War II, the US stepped up to help to protect Greenland, and Dans\u2019 grandfather was part of that effort as a merchant mariner.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001l3b6mi9aqy7h9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When we met, Dans had just traveled to Narsarsuaq, near the southern tip of Greenland, to commemorate the anniversary of the Nazi torpedoing of the US Army Transport Dorchester with the loss of almost 700 lives in 1943.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001m3b6mo2fyqwdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dans gestured toward a Danish Royal Navy vessel moored in the harbor. The Danes provide some security for Greenland but in reality, their navy is too small and the United States is again the main force protecting the island, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001n3b6mlyio7k54@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s an argument he\u2019s also made on the show of a former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon. \u201cPart of what is really important today, in the moment, is for Americans and the rest of the world to realize how closely intertwined our country has been with Greenland for so long and why it\u2019s so important,\u201d he said in a live appearance from Narsarsuaq last Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001p3b6mi4nzfa4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dans brought me to a caf\u00e9 to meet J\u00f8rgen Boassen, a Greenlander nicknamed \u201cTrump\u2019s son.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001q3b6m3izsruup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Boassen achieved semi-celebrity status in the MAGA universe as Greenland\u2019s biggest Trump supporter and was among those who welcomed Donald Trump Jr. when he visited Nuuk last month.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001r3b6mr3caustt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He has made multiple trips to the US in recent months \u2014 attending the Trump victory party in Mar-a-Lago on election night and the inauguration. And just a few days into the new Trump administration \u2014 Boassen, Dans, and a Greenlandic politician visited the White House, where they posed with the Greenland flag.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001t3b6m4urc42z6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But even Boassen does not want Greenland to be taken over by the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001u3b6mihe6u04z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He doesn\u2019t want to be subsumed as the 51st state, he says, but wants the US to be Greenland\u2019s \u201cbest and closest ally with everything \u2014 with defense, mining, oil exploration, trade, everything.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001v3b6ml29kpl75@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Not all Greenlanders want to break free from Denmark.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf001w3b6mzarv4d0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe might be ready someday, but not today, not tomorrow,\u201d says Aqqalu C. And the parliament just fast-tracked a law banning foreign political funding.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf00233b6m7k9rzzth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That\u2019s fine by H\u00f8jdal \u2014 the Danish guidance counselor I met at the airport \u2014 who said Greenland\u2019s future is for Greenland, not anyone else, to decide.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf00243b6ms3rxiipy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As she watches the news coming from the United States of the hectic first weeks of the second Trump administration, she says a Turkish proverb comes to mind.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm6vb3fmf00253b6mwlps5gza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen a clown enters a castle, he doesn\u2019t become a king.
