A German tattoo artist who tried to enter the United States from Mexico through the San Diego border has been in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention for over a month, according to a friend who witnessed her being detained. <\/p>\n

Jessica Br\u00f6sche, a Berlin-based tattoo artist, had been vacationing in Mexico when she decided to travel to the US from Tijuana with an American friend, Nikita Lofving. But at the San Ysidro port of entry immigration authorities took Br\u00f6sche into custody. <\/p>\n

The call was on January 25. Br\u00f6sche has been in detention ever since, half a month past when she originally hoped to leave the US on February 15, Lofving says. <\/p>\n

In a statement to KGTV, an ICE spokesperson wrote that Br\u00f6sche is in detention due \u201cto the violation of the terms and conditions of her admission.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, she was <\/em>coming to work, but not really for money,\u201d Lofving said. \u201cWe have an agreement between artists. She\u2019s one of my best friends. We\u2019ve been working on this tattoo project on my body for the last five or six years, and in exchange, I make clothes for her.\u201d <\/p>\n

In a phone interview with KGTV last month, Br\u00f6sche said that she had been kept in \u201chorrible\u201d solitary confinement for eight days when she entered US custody. <\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to get home, you know? I\u2019m really desperate,\u201d\u202fBr\u00f6sche told KGTV from Otay Mesa. \u201cI don\u2019t really understand why it\u2019s taking so long to get back to Germany.\u201d <\/p>\n

Lofving said that Br\u00f6sche\u2019s friends and family are hoping that she\u2019ll be out of detention and on a flight back to Germany on March 11, and that her mother bought her a plane ticket home. They aren\u2019t sure whether ICE will let her out by then, however. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe sent (Br\u00f6sche) back the information for the tickets, and she told her ICE agent,\u201d Lofving continued, saying the ICE agent had said, \u201cNo, you have to get the ticket approved before you buy it.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018Extremely concerning\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur responsibility is to care for each person respectfully and humanely while they receive the legal due process that they are entitled to,\u201d said spokesperson Ryan Gustin. <\/p>\n

By entering on the waiver program, a tourist waives their right to any kind of litigation, Joseph explained. <\/p>\n

But normally, a tourist denied entry to the US would be allowed to withdraw their application for admission. \u201cInstead of being subjected to deportation proceedings, they\u2019re allowed to kind of get back on the airplane and turn around and go home, and that does not appear to have happened in this case,\u201d Joseph continued. <\/p>\n

In any case, Joseph said that Br\u00f6sche\u2019s extended stay in Otay Mesa is \u201cextremely concerning.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
