Scientists say that cuts out a vital resource for global health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsn4i500782cpbapiifiaw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US government will stop sharing air quality data gathered from its embassies and consulates, worrying local scientists and experts who say the effort was vital to monitor global air quality and improve public health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsnuyg00053b6mqxgh6k8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In response to an inquiry from The Associated Press, the State Department said Wednesday that its air quality monitoring program would no longer transmit air pollution data from embassies and consulates to the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s AirNow app and other platforms, which allowed locals in various countries, along with scientists around the globe, to see and analyze air quality in cities around the world.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsn86i00003b6mpnhtfzfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The stop in sharing data was \u201cdue to funding constraints that have caused the Department to turn off the underlying network\u201d read the statement, which added that embassies and consulates were directed to keep their monitors running and the sharing of data could resume in the future if funding was restored.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wtd8cf00013b6mjhx1ssd3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The fiscal cut, first reported by the New York Times, is one of many under President Donald Trump, whose administration has been deprioritizing environmental and climate initiatives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wso10100093b6mkt9lr44q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The US air quality monitors measured dangerous fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and lead to respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and premature death. The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution kills around 7 million people each year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wso9kv000e3b6m9yxw14jb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            News of the data sharing being cut prompted immediate reaction from scientists who said the data were reliable, allowed for air quality monitoring around the world and helped prompt governments to clean up the air.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm7wsog56000g3b6mzhebixv8@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-big-blow-to-global-air-quality-research\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018A big blow\u2019 to global air quality research<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wso93a000c3b6mkgxrqfkg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bhargav Krishna, an air pollution expert at New Delhi-based Sustainable Futures Collaborative, called the loss of data \u201ca big blow\u201d to air quality research.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsouji000m3b6m7er3ykbp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey were part of a handful of sensors in many developing countries and served as a reference for understanding what air quality was like,\u201d Krishna said. \u201cThey were also seen to be a well-calibrated and unbiased source of data to cross-check local data if there were concerns about quality.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsou2t000k3b6mh07dix7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a real shame\u201d, said Alejandro Piracoca Mayorga, a Bogota, Colombia-based freelance air quality consultant. US embassies and consulates in Lima, Peru, Sao Paulo and Bogota have had the public air monitoring. \u201cIt was a source of access to air quality information independent of local monitoring networks. They provided another source of information for comparison.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsp3nl000t3b6m7cul4doo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Khalid Khan, an environmental expert and advocate based in Pakistan, agreed, saying the shutdown of air quality monitoring will \u201chave significant consequences.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsp38f000r3b6m0tu24k7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Khan noted that the monitors in Peshawar, Pakistan, one of the most polluted cities in the world, \u201cprovided crucial real-time data\u201d which helped policy makers, researchers and the public to take decisions on their health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsp9v0000y3b6muab4gkn3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cTheir removal means a critical gap in environmental monitoring, leaving residents without accurate information on hazardous air conditions,\u201d Khan said. He said vulnerable people in Pakistan and around the world are particularly at risk as they are the least likely to have access to other reliable data.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsp9ex000w3b6mreqzevjw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Africa, the program provided air quality data for over a dozen countries including Senegal, Nigeria, Chad and Madagascar. Some of those countries depend almost entirely on the US monitoring systems for their air quality data.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wspe0100133b6mqur45myc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The WHO\u2019s air quality database will also be affected by the closing of US program. Many poor countries don\u2019t track air quality because stations are too expensive and complex to maintain, meaning they are entirely reliant on US embassy monitoring data.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm7wspm50001a3b6ms17akgp1@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"monitors-strengthened-local-efforts\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Monitors strengthened local efforts<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wspdky00113b6mmp68fpdf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In some places, the US air quality monitors propelled nations to start their own air quality research and raised awareness, Krishna said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wspidj00183b6mi10gue4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In China, for example, data from the US Embassy in Beijing famously contradicted official government reports, showing worse pollution levels than authorities acknowledged. It led to China improving air quality.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm7wsphxr00163b6mcd86u01l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Officials in Pakistan\u2019s eastern Punjab province, which struggles with smog, said they were unfazed by the removal of the US monitors.
