He pushed back gently whenever he could, but he didn\u2019t raise his voice or show anger, displaying his decades of negotiation experience.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywr7le00063b6mfrccyyx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat else could Cyril have done?\u201d asked veteran journalist Milton Nkosi. \u201cYou\u2019re damned if you do, damned if you don\u2019t. I think they were caught completely unawares. How on earth could you have planned for that?\u201d said Nkosi, who\u2019s a senior research fellow at the Africa Asia Dialogues think tank.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywr7le00073b6m55iycdfp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On social media and across South Africa\u2019s broadcast outlets, consensus seemed to quickly form that Ramaphosa did the best under the circumstances. He remained \u201ccalm, collected and humble in the face of bigotry and lies,\u201d posted one user on X. \u201cYou were a leader today. Went to build not to fight.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywomse00003b6m8661ecwt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ramaphosa brought his own White billionaire to the meeting \u2013 luxury goods magnate Johan Rupert, who\u2019s behind brands like Cartier \u2013 who told Trump that violent crime affects all races, but his words fell on deaf ears.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywrj1l000d3b6m7nd8vjgk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Rupert even threw tech billionaire Elon Musk,<strong> <\/strong>\ufeffwho was also in the room,<strong> <\/strong>a bone.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywrj1l000e3b6mgh6pqnmm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have too many deaths. But it\u2019s across the board,\u201d Rupert said. \u201cIt\u2019s not only White farmers. It\u2019s across the board. We need technological help. We need Starlink at every little police station. We need drones.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywrj1l000f3b6mhyxgbkxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One White South African called Rupert a traitor to his fellow Afrikaners in a social media post.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmayxg0zu00113b6mw6tf0qn8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another prominent White South African, agriculture minister John Steenhuisen, also tried to convince their Oval Office host that he had been misled.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywripm000b3b6mkkt8541a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The most dramatic part of the scene was when Trump called for lights to be dimmed and screened a four-and-a-half minute montage claiming to show evidence of a White genocide. It included far-left opposition leader Julius Malema singing \u201cKill the Boer, kill the farmer\u201d as a crowd chanted along.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmayxgd1100133b6mnqtrjd3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Officially named \u201cDubula iBhunu\u201d in the Xhosa language, the song emerged in the 1980s to fight the unjust system of segregation. South African courts have ruled that it doesn\u2019t mean a literal call to kill White farmers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywruvb000k3b6m1boiknpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in 2024 that any \u201creasonably well-informed person\u201d would see it as a \u201chistoric struggle song, with the performance gestures that go with it, as a provocative means of advancing his party\u2019s political agenda.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywruvb000l3b6mtpdesa7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Trump confronted Ramaphosa on why he had not arrested Malema for it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmayxgr8d00153b6m4filhtio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Malema, leader of the the Economic Freedom Fighters party, responded in his typical fiery way on X: \u201cA group of older men meet in Washington to gossip about me,\u201d he said, disputing the claims of a genocide. \u201cWe will not agree to compromise our political principles on land expropriation without compensation for political expediency.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywruvb000m3b6mskqvdw8t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Malema was expelled from Ramaphosa\u2019s African National Congress (ANC) party more than a decade ago and came third in the most recent election.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywruvb000n3b6ml3yf92l0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most of the information that Trump used to try to prove that \u201cWhite genocide\u201d is happening in South Africa has repeatedly been disproven.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywrujd000i3b6mcrrvoepx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some South Africans have said that they believe that the information is \u201cAfriForum propaganda\u201d \u2013 referring to a White Afrikaner lobby group criticized as being a White nationalist group.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmayws6xq000t3b6m1jhtq7ds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt shows that the South African president and the ANC leadership cannot just simply sweep real problems that we have in the country under the carpet and think they will disappear,\u201d Kallie Kriel said in a voice note.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmayws6mf000q3b6md3brk2ko@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It was the toughest public test yet for Ramaphosa, a skilled dealmaker who led negotiations for Nelson Mandela in talks that ended apartheid.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmaywsfr0000z3b6mymvk8uvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It was a good day for South Africa\u2019s White nationalists.
